Two kinds of rights sit behind every karaoke song

Most bar owners assume their music license covers karaoke night. It's the most common licensing mix-up we see, and an easy one to make.

Performance rights. When guests sing a song in public, the songwriters and publishers are owed for the performance. In the US, performing rights organizations (PROs) such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC license that, each for its own catalog of songs.

Karaoke content rights. A karaoke track shows the lyrics on screen, timed to the music. Pairing lyrics and video with a recording needs permission from the publishers (often called sync rights), plus the rights to the track itself. A PRO license doesn't include these.

Running karaoke from YouTube today?

Plenty of venues start karaoke night on YouTube or a host's laptop. It's free, and your staff already know how it works.

YouTube's terms cover personal, non-commercial viewing, though. They don't give a venue permission to show karaoke videos to guests, and many karaoke uploads aren't licensed by the rights holders in the first place. Your performance licence doesn't close that gap, because it covers the performance and not the karaoke video and lyrics.

There are practical costs too: ads in the middle of a chorus, videos taken down or blocked by region, and no way to manage a queue. Moving to a licensed catalogue doesn't mean starting again. Your screen, speakers and mics stay where they are.
