Each room is designed with different themes, high quality sound system, in-room service and Singa Karaoke, designed by the team at Aivan.fi, a a Finnish design, brand and innovation studio based in Helsinki, Finland but design all over the world, a strategic and creative services that help businesses build their products and brand.

From the outset, the goal was clear. Create a space where people feel safe, free, and inspired to perform, while delivering a visually unforgettable experience.

Core concept and vision

When designing Åke Karaoke, the goal was never simply to create karaoke rooms. The ambition was to build an immersive world, a venue where design shapes behavior, lowers inhibitions, and turns ordinary evenings into unforgettable moments. The four key elements that defined the foundation of the concept from the start were the disco era, the name Åke, the birthplace of karaoke, and the building itself.

The venue’s beautiful structural framework and its distinctive windows (visible in every room) became guiding features of the design. Rather than masking the architecture, the designers embraced it, allowing the natural rhythm of the building to influence spatial flow, lighting and mood. As the venue rooted in karaoke culture, the name also evokes Åke Blomqvist, who helped bring disco energy into Finnish nightlife in the 1970s. That association sparked the creative direction: a bold, glamorous 70s disco atmosphere running throughout the venue.

As a request from the owners, they wanted a strong casino-red presence, particularly in on of their larger karaoke rooms Jugend. Instead of applying the theme literally, the designers fused the intensity of casino glamour with the electric atmosphere of Studio 54. Deep reds, dark wood tones, reflective surfaces and layered lighting create a space that feels theatrical yet intimate. The result is bold but controlled, immersive without being overwhelming.

Because Åke is located at street level, privacy and intimacy became critical design priorities. From the moment guests step inside, the intention is clear: you are entering another world, almost like discovering a secret bar. The outside fades away. Curtains wrap around the rooms, soft surfaces absorb sound, and lighting shifts the atmosphere into something more cinematic.

The designers wanted the venue to feel like a safe space, a place where guests feel free regardless of how they sing, perform or express themselves. Karaoke is vulnerable by nature. Good design supports that vulnerability.

Åke’s karaoke rooms

Each room at Åke Karaoke has its own distinct identity, yet all are built around the essentials of a seamless karaoke experience. Wireless microphones, integrated TV screens and Singa Karaoke on a wall-mounted iPad ensure intuitive navigation and smooth performance flow. Playfulness is embedded into the rooms themselves. Wigs, props, and dedicated hangers and drawers for performance outfits are thoughtfully incorporated into the interiors. These elements are not decorative extras, they invite guests to transform, experiment and step into a different version of themselves.

An unforgettable experience

What makes Åke Karaoke truly unforgettable is its identity and uniqueness. It’s in the architecture, concept and atmosphere. Every design decision supports a singular ambition: that moment when a guest walks in and thinks, “I’ve never seen anything like this before. That reaction matters. Because when a space feels original and intentional, people engage differently. They stay longer. They sing louder. They return.

One of the most surprising moments came during the grand opening. In the Singa Suite, the designers have opted for having a stage place in the center of the room, something new from the traditional corner-stage layout common in karaoke room venues. The initial thought was guests might feel too exposed, but gave this a try.

Guests naturally stepped onto the stage, embracing the spotlight without hesitation. By centering the performance area, the design shifted the dynamic of the room. The singer became the heart of the space, surrounded by friends rather than separated from them.

The future of karaoke rooms

In Finland, karaoke has long been associated with late-night outings. But the culture is evolving. Karaoke rooms are becoming more inclusive, more accessible and more versatile with introducing after work gatherings, corporate teams, birthday celebrations and diverse groups with completely different music tastes and energy levels.

Åke’s key advice for anyone designing their first karaoke venue is simple; embrace the feeling of a safe space and intimacy. It should feel like you’re really sheltered and you can just let your soul be free. And go a bit crazy. Karaoke rooms can handle that. They can be more playful, more bold. This is the place where you can just let go and relax.
